Slate is formed from very fine grained shale and clay deposits which have settled, under extreme temperature and pressure, over millions of years to form layers. This process creates a distinctive grain on the exterior of the slate which is known as its natural ‘cleft’. This texture makes slate ideal for use outdoors where a positive anti-slip finish is required.
Slate also comes honed and tumbled for a smoother finish, more suitable for interior use.
Common slate colours vary from black, green and grey and can also have elements of red and gold and even purple.
